Post-operative instructions for periapical surgery
​
  1. Apply an ice pack to the affected area for 6-12 hours after surgery at intervals of 20 minutes on, 5 minutes off until bedtime

  2. Do not chew anything until the local anesthetic has completely worn off. When the local anesthetic has worn off, you may eat soft food. After 48 hours, you may resume your normal diet.

  3. Do not brush or floss the affected area for 48 hours after the surgery. After 48 hours, you may brush and floss gently.

  4. It is normal to have mild/moderate pain for a few days after the surgery. Please contact us if you have severe pain.

  5. It is normal to have mild/moderate swelling after the surgery. The swelling usually starts the following day after the surgery and then it takes approximately 5 days to run its course.

  6. You will need to return to our office within a week to check the healing progress and remove the sutures if needed.

Post-operative instructions for root canal treatment
​
  1. Do not chew anything until the local anesthetic has completely worn off. 

  2. Avoid eating hard/sticky food on the treated tooth and eat on the opposite side of the mouth until you see your family dentist for the permanent restoration.

  3. The tooth will be sensitive for a few days after the treatment especially to touching, chewing, and tapping. Sensitivity may continue for a few weeks.

  4. To avoid a fracture or infection in the tooth, it is very important for you to make an appointment with your family dentist to permanently restore the tooth within three weeks.

  5. Please contact us if you have any severe pain or swelling.
